One shake reconfigures the beads into different, correct number combinations (see Ways to Use). Self-checking: addition equation printed on one side, corresponding subtraction equation on the other. Ten counters, one each for solutions one to ten, includes two each of red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Plastic, 4" x 2" counters.

Three columns each contain beads. The first two columns are connected and together contain the same amount of beads as the third column, which is self-contained.

The students shake the counter to reconfigure the beads in the first two columns. They add the number of beads in the first column to the number of beads in the second column to get the total number of beads in the third column. (For the counter representing the number 6, it would be __ + __ = 6).

On the subtraction side, the columns are exactly the same, only reversed, so the student must subtract the number of beads in the second column from the total number of beads in the first (self-contained) column to get the answer in the third column: 6 - __ = __.
